Motherboard โ what it decides
In laptops the motherboard is fixed and rarely a buying criterion by itself โ but it decides the upgrade ceiling: memory slots, storage slots and port selection.
Unlike desktops, a laptop's motherboard is custom per model and not user-replaceable. What matters for a buyer is not the board itself but what it enables.
What it decides
- RAM โ soldered memory means no upgrade; slots mean you can add a module later.
- Storage โ one or two M.2 slots; a free slot is the cheapest future upgrade.
- Ports and wireless โ the connectors listed on the ports and wireless pages are wired to this board.
How it affects your choice
Check upgradeability before buying a memory-starved configuration: a model with free slots can grow with you, a fully soldered one cannot. Spec sheets and reviews usually state "soldered" versus "slots" explicitly.
