Processor (CPU)

The processor is the laptop's main compute engine โ€” it handles every action from opening a browser tab to compiling code. Its class matters more than its peak speed number.

A CPU executes instructions. Two properties describe most of what a buyer needs: how many cores (independent work units) it has, and how fast each core runs (clock speed, GHz). Many laptop CPUs also include basic integrated graphics.

Classes and differences

  • U-class (low power) โ€” thin, quiet, long battery life; found in everyday and ultrabook models.
  • H-class (performance) โ€” more cores at higher power; the usual choice for gaming and creative laptops.
  • HX-class (enthusiast) โ€” desktop-class core counts for workstations; needs substantial cooling.
  • Generations โ€” a newer generation at the same class is usually faster and more efficient than an older one; generation numbers appear in model names.
  • Core Ultra 7 265K 100
  • Core Ultra 7 265KF 100
  • Core Ultra 9 275HX 100
  • Core Ultra 9 285K 100
  • Ryzen AI Max+ 395 99.3

How it affects your choice

Office work, browsing and study feel similar on any modern CPU โ€” do not overpay for cores you will not use. Compilation, 3D rendering, video export and heavy multitasking benefit directly from more cores. In thin laptops, sustained speed depends on cooling as much as on the chip itself.
