HP EliteBook 850 G1 review

EliteBook 850 G1 — a 2013 15-inch business classic with the vintage-GPU caveat

The 2013 EliteBook 850 G1 is HP's Haswell-era 15-inch business flagship: an i5-4300U with 16 GB of RAM. At $174 it sits far below the business-class median of $297. The scores need honest framing: a mainstream graphics placing (45.85, top quarter) that flatters the hardware, RAM at 16 GB — 60% below the class median — and reliability 17 against a 42.5 median (worn).

The big-body business formula

The 850 G1 delivered the full EliteBook treatment in a 15-inch chassis: excellent keyboard, solid audio, docking support and the premium build of the generation. The dual-core i5-4300U runs cool and patient — office duty is its comfort zone. The 16 GB of RAM remains workable for multitasking at a relaxed pace; this was the standard professional configuration of its year.

Reading the numbers without flattery

The mainstream graphics placing reflects the business class's low graphics baseline — the integrated HD 4400-class part has no modern gaming capability regardless of the placing; minimum-tier modern titles fail on this silicon. Reliability at 17 (−60% versus class) flags twelve years of service: batteries, hinges and coating are all at end-of-life stage. The machine's residual quality is mechanical, not computational.

Price trajectory

From roughly $1,300 new to $174 today at 6.2% per year, projecting to $153 in two years (12.1% lower). Terminal commodity pricing for the tier — the keyboard and chassis carry the value.

Where it sits against peers

Pricier neighbors are the EliteBook Folio 1040 G2 ($184) and Dell Latitude 7370 ($184) — slimmer machines of the same spirit; cheaper options are the Dell Latitude E7240 ($160) and ThinkPad X1 Carbon 3rd Gen ($152) — the X1 Carbon being the premium rival at less money. The 850 G1's case is the big keyboard and screen at the lowest price in its neighborhood.

Bottom line

Worth the asking price as a desk-duty typing machine: the best keyboard-per-dollar in its band, honest Haswell-era pace, and terminal pricing. The graphics placing is cosmetic and the reliability reading demands inspection. For patient office work at a desk, it remains a pleasant machine; for anything faster, the newer neighbors serve better.
