Lenovo ThinkBook 14s-IWL review

A 2018 ThinkBook 14s with a working Radeon 540X at a mid price

The Lenovo ThinkBook 14s-IWL (2018) combines an Intel Core i7 8565U, an AMD Radeon 540X and 32GB of RAM at $333, slightly above the business-class median of about $297. The Radeon is a real working entry-level card: a graphics score of 22.22 against a class median of 3.84 — nearly five times the class norm — and the flags confirm Overwatch and Grand Theft Auto V clear minimum settings.

Flag-confirmed graphics in a business shell

Unlike the token cards whose flags all fail, the 540X delivers what its score promises: light and esports-class titles at minimum settings run, and everyday graphics, photo light-editing and media work get a dedicated buffer. With 32GB of RAM alongside, the configuration covers casual gaming and multitasking in the same machine — a rarity in the business bracket, where most rivals are integrated-only.

The measured boundary, and the reliability footnote

The envelope is real but bounded: Far Cry 5 fails its minimum bar outright — modern AAA is out of scope. The verdict names reliability the top weakness (22 against a class median of 42.5), and the CPU reads below the median (38.13 against 52.97). Those are the costs of the package; at $333 they are acceptable ones for a buyer who wants a working dGPU without paying gaming-laptop prices.

An ordinary curve for the vintage

From a $1300 base the ThinkBook 14s has come down to $333, about 8% per year, with a projected $282 in two years. The slightly-above-median entry adds a little to the absolute two-year loss.

Business-class neighbors

Pricier options include the EliteBook 850 G7 ($364) and EliteBook 645 G9 ($373); cheaper ones include the Dell Vostro 15 3578 ($309) and EliteBook 845 G7 ($291). None of the four carries a discrete GPU — the 14s stands alone on that axis in its neighborhood.

Bottom line

The ThinkBook 14s-IWL at $333 is the business-bracket pick for light graphics duty: flag-confirmed Radeon 540X (Overwatch and GTA V at minimum; Far Cry 5 honestly fails its minimum), 32GB of RAM and a capable i7. Reliability (22) and CPU headroom are the costs. For casual gaming plus office work in one machine, it earns its price.
