Lenovo ThinkPad T420 review

A 2011 classic bought for its chassis, not its odds

The ThinkPad T420 (2011) at $95 is the oldest ThinkPad in this band, and the measurements frame it precisely: a reliability index of 2 against a class median of 42.5 — the floor of the scale — alongside a performance index of 4.77 and a CPU score of 7.98, both in the lowest band. Its one above-median reading is a 57Wh battery, top quartile for the class, though fourteen-year-old cells make that a spec-sheet number rather than a runtime promise. The lone strength axis the verdict surfaces is that battery capacity.

The measurements say: capability expired

The game checks are unanimous failures — Metro Exodus registers far below the minimum bar, The Witcher 3 six. The NVS 4200M was a business-graphics card when new and is far below every modern threshold now. What remains is a quad-era Core i5 that still runs light Linux-and-office duty, inside the keyboard-and-hinge quality that made this chassis a classic.

Buying remaining runtime, not capability

With reliability at 2, this purchase is best understood as acquiring a piece of hardware history or a tinker-and-repair platform: everything is serviceable, and the value is in the servicing. As a daily machine the sheet rules it out; as a collector's or hobbyist's unit the price is the appeal.

The value curve is flat

From a $1,300 launch anchor the price has decayed to $95 at just 5.69% per year — the slowest rate in this row, because most loss already happened years ago. The two-year projection is $85, an 11% drift. There is essentially no depreciation risk left; likewise no recovery story.

Against its vintage peers

HP's ProBook 650 G1 ($109) and Dell's Latitude E6430 ($101) bracket it from above; nothing cheaper in the catalog is meaningfully newer. Among 2011–2013 business units the T420's reputation — not its measurements — is what sets the price.

Bottom line

Ninety-five dollars buys the last usable generation of the classic seven-row-era ThinkPad: a machine to keep working as a hobby, a spare, or a piece of design history. The verdict's "worth the asking price" is true in exactly that frame — no buyer should arrive expecting 2020s capability from a sheet this expired.
