Performance scores
A compact 12.5-inch Latitude with a weak CPU
The Dell Latitude 7280 (2016) is a 12.5-inch business ultraportable built around Intel's dual-core Core i5-6200U and 32 GB of RAM. At about $174 it sits in the ultra-budget tier for business laptops, well below the $297 category median. The hardware is honest about its vintage: the dual-core i5-6200U is a 2015 part, the CPU score lands in the "basic" band well below the category median, and the reliability index is also low.
Where it shines: form factor
The Latitude 7280's appeal is the 12.5-inch ultraportable form factor at a bargain price. For a buyer who specifically wants a small, light laptop for documents, email and browsing, the 32 GB of RAM is genuinely more than most ultra-budget machines offer, and the integrated Intel HD Graphics 620 handles everyday media and hardware-accelerated video without complaint. The capability fit shows minimum-setting Grand Theft Auto V, Rainbow Six Siege and Civilization 6 are technically within reach, which is more than can be said for many iGPU-only configurations.
Where it doesn't: CPU-intensive compute
The dual-core i5-6200U posts a CPU score well below the category median, in the "basic" band. The graphics solution is also entry-level. Buyers should expect a machine that handles office work and light multitasking well, but anything CPU- or GPU-heavy — modern gaming, video editing, large compilations — is out of scope.
Price trajectory
From an original $1,300 MSRP, the Latitude 7280 has depreciated to about $174 today — an annual rate near 7.2%. Projected forward, another two years bring it to roughly $150, a 13.9% drop. The curve has flattened.
How it compares
Slightly above it, the Dell Latitude 3480 ($187) and Dell Latitude 7370 ($184) are the natural step-up alternatives — similar ultraportable hardware for a small premium. Below it, the Lenovo ThinkPad T460 ($162) and Dell Latitude 5580 ($159) are cheaper, though neither matches the 7280's 12.5-inch form factor.
Bottom line
The Latitude 7280 is worth the asking price for buyers who specifically want a compact 12.5-inch business ultraportable and accept the trade-offs: a weak dual-core CPU and a low reliability score. The 32 GB of RAM and the form factor are the selling points; performance beyond office work is limited. For buyers who don't need the 12.5-inch form factor, the ThinkPad T460 at $162 is a strong alternative.
