Performance scores
MSI Raider GE78 HX (2023) — the only RTX 4070 in the $922 tier
The Raider GE78 HX (2023) at $922 is the 17-inch 2023 flagship route: a Core i9-13950HX, the only GeForce RTX 4070 (8 GB) in this batch, and 64 GB of RAM. The flagged strengths are battery capacity at 99.9 Wh (+40.7% above the class median) and reliability at 71; the flagged weakness is weight at 3.1 kg, 29.2% above typical.
Where it holds up
The 4070 shows where it counts: photo design posts 99 (top) — the top creative reading of the $922 tier — with office 98.84 (top), performance 80.29 (high) and gaming 77 (high). The 99.9 Wh battery matches the GE68, the card clears the recommended bar for Overwatch, Grand Theft Auto V and Rainbow Six Siege, and the modeling/CAD pair reads 66 (high). Value posts 64.35 (mid).
Where it falls short
Weight is the flagged weakness (3.1 kg) and portability reads 8.3 — near the absolute floor, the price of the 17-inch panel plus the huge cell. Gaming at 77 and modeling at 66 sit high rather than top: a 2023 4070 is a tier behind the 2024-2026 flagships, honestly measured.
Price and depreciation
No depreciation anchor is recorded (base $0); no curve or projection applies. The 2023 cohort rate is 16.26% per year — three years of decay already in the price.
Alternatives to consider
The Raider GE68 (2023) at the same $922 is the same battery and platform in a 16-inch body with the RTX 4060; the Raider GE78 HX (2024) at $1,152 brings the newer 14900HX platform and 96 GB — but only the 4060.
Bottom line
Fairly priced for the class. The top-photo reading of the $922 tier on the tier's only 4070 — a desk-bound 2023 flagship that still out-creates its price. Portability at 8.3 shares the batch floor with the other 17-inch flagships.
