Summary

The Galaxy A12 was among the best-selling phones of its year worldwide: a $180 big-screen budget slab with a 6.5-inch display, 5,000 mAh battery and quad cameras — quantity over quality, honestly delivered. Our everyday score of 19/100 and screen score of 18/100 record the tier plainly. It sold in the hundreds of millions because it did the minimum reliably, not because it was good.

Display and design

The 6.5-inch LCD at 60 Hz and 450 nits is adequate indoors and strained outdoors; contrast and resolution are budget-LCD standard. At 205 g with no IP rating, the plastic body was built to a price and to survive indifference. The 77/100 compactness score merely notes the weight is distributed well for the size.

Performance

The Helio P35 is entry-level silicon of the previous decade's pace: everyday 19/100, gaming 0/100. Apps open slowly, updates test patience, and the phone's global audience used it for messaging, banking and video — all of which it does, eventually. Software support ended years ago.

Camera

Four sensors — a 48 MP main, 5 MP ultrawide, 2 MP macro and 2 MP depth — which is to say one camera and three decorations. The 17/100 score belongs almost entirely to the main sensor's daylight output. It was a spec-sheet play, and it worked commercially.

Battery and charging

The 5,000 mAh cell scores 40/100 and is the real feature: with silicon this slow, two days of light use is standard. Charging at 15 W fills it eventually; overnight is the rhythm.

Verdict

Used supply exists at rock bottom: 3/32 units around $45 (two listings) — as cheap as a functional smartphone gets. At that price the question is only whether any smartphone at all is needed at minimum spend, and the A12 answers yes. Anything more demanding should look at the newer Galaxy A23, which modernizes the same formula for modest money.
