The Asus ROG Phone 8 Pro is the 2024 gaming flagship that softened the genre's edges: a 165 Hz OLED at 2,500 nits, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, a 5,500 mAh battery, AirTrigger shoulder buttons — and a camera system that no longer embarrasses the rest of the spec sheet. It launched at $1,199 for the 16/512 GB tier, which now trades used for around $649 with a deep 13-sale sample behind the median.
Display and design
The 6.78-inch OLED pairs a 165 Hz refresh rate with a 2,500-nit peak for a screen-quality score of 93/100 — near the top of the catalog and decisive in competitive shooters. At 225 g with a 66/100 compactness score, it is slimmer than gaming phones used to be, and IP68 protection is included.
Performance
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 with Asus's vapour chamber and bypass charging earns a gaming score of 54/100 — sustained 3D performance a conventional 2024 flagship would throttle away. AirTriggers and the 720 Hz touch sampling remain the genre's best controls. The caveat is software: a two-year update window that is now closed, so this is a buy for today, not for 2028.
Camera
The 50 MP stabilised main sensor with gimbal-style stabilisation, plus ultrawide and 3x telephoto modules, shoots up to 8K at 24 fps. Our camera score of 48/100 is respectable mid-catalog — a generation ago, gaming phones conceded this entirely.
Battery and charging
The 5,500 mAh battery scores 50/100 on battery life, with 65 W wired charging (46/100) filling it in under an hour. Bypass charging during plugged-in play spares the cell from heat and cycles.
Verdict
At around $649 used, the ROG Phone 8 Pro is the value entry into serious mobile gaming hardware: 165 Hz, real controls, sustained performance, and a 94/100 resale score showing the market agrees. Accept the closed update window and mid camera. If you want the longest support and the newest chip, budget up to the ROG Phone 9 Pro; if conventional flagship styling matters more than frame rates, the Zenfone 11 Ultra shares much of the platform.
