What still works

The i5-8250U was the first quad-core U-series chip and it still carries office loads respectably, and 32GB of RAM is generous for the format. Even Grand Theft Auto V — a title as old as this machine — fails its minimum bar. As a desk-bound document and browser machine with a big panel, the fundamentals hold — the 17-inch display was this machine's reason to exist, and it remains the reason to buy one now.

Where the spec sheet misleads

The R7 M340 is a nominal dGPU: measured Far Cry 5 and Battlefield 5 both fall far below minimum. The card moves the spec sheet more than the pixels. Mobility at 17 and reliability at 22 complete the picture of an aging desktop-replacement whose battery and build were never its point.
