You are studying computer science or a neighbouring engineering field. Your week is lectures and labs, a lot of code, occasional modeling or CAD electives, and notes that need to survive until exams. Money is finite and mostly spoken for. This guide breaks down what each device actually does for that role, and where a limited budget goes furthest.
The honest starting point
A student's phone is the device that is always there; the laptop is the one that does the work. Neither can cover the other's half: no phone compiles your assignments or runs the lab VMs, and no laptop fits in a pocket between lectures. The practical question is not "which one" — it is how much each side needs to be genuinely useful.
What your phone already covers
More of a study week than most people admit. Reading documentation and PDFs between lectures, group-chat coordination, quick reference lookups, flashcards and spaced repetition, capturing whiteboards and lecture boards, and all the campus logistics — schedules, room changes, canteen queues. For this role a phone's strengths are reading comfort and battery, not raw performance.
Where the laptop earns its place
The entire production side of the degree: an IDE with a real keyboard, local builds and debugging, virtual machines and containers for systems courses, modeling and CAD work in engineering electives, exam and lab software that assumes a desktop environment, and long typing sessions that would punish a phone. Memory capacity and a comfortable keyboard matter more here than a discrete GPU — unless gaming is genuinely part of your study-life balance, in which case the needs table below already weights it.
